BEAMS RESEARCH PROGRAM

Asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood. Asthma affects the breathing of 6 million children across the US, and nearly 1 million of those children are under 4 years of age. In Mexico, rates of asthma are increasing, with up to 25% of school-aged children affected.

Our team found that rates of asthma in children vary significantly across the Arizona-Mexico border region, from 7% in some areas of Sonora, to 28% in South Tucson. We believe that these differences are due to different environments and exposures in each neighborhood.

What if we could identify exposures that protect children from asthma and learn how they work?

This is what the Binational Early Asthma and Microbiome Study (BEAMS) study intends to do. Keep reading to find out moreā€¦
